A very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walks into Wal-Mart with her two kids in tow, screaming obscenities at them all the way through the entrance.

The Wal-Mart Greeter says, "Good morning and welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice children you've got there - are they twins?"

The ugly woman stops screaming long enough to say, "Hell no they ain't, the oldest one, he's 9 and the younger one, she's 7. Why the hell would you think they're twins?? Do you really think they look alike?"

"No," replies the greeter. "I just couldn't believe that someone would have slept with you twice. You have a nice day now."

Everything is going pretty well. Last week was kind of weird, though. Wednesday was the last day at work for our network administrator. He was responsible for the network infrastructure: routers, switches, etc. We had just completed pretty much replacing all of our core hardware with something on the order of $750k of new Cisco gear. We had a lot of teething problems getting it stable, and are still having some problems, but overall it's been a very good upgrade.

Friday was the bad one, though. The director of IT for the City left! Out of the blue he received a call from the State of California (how they got all of 'em on the phone at the same time I'll never know) and they made him an offer. He wasn't looking for a new position, he was quite happy with Las Cruces and he did a great job of bringing the department together and modernizing it. We've been retiring old equipment and just shut down a Unix box running Oracle and will be retiring the mainframe in about a year. I can't imagine what the change in the power bill will be, much less the change in noise level in the machine room!(which my computer is right next to) It will save a tonne of money in support contracts, that's for sure.

Still, Patrick is a really cool guy and I hate to see him go. We had a going-away dinner Thursday night, Russet came down and went to it with me. It was a huge amount of fun, and it turned out that we sat next to two science/science fiction geeks! Had lots of fun talking about the observatory and Star Wars.

Saturday was fun, we went to Truth Or Consequences, the town named after the game show. Two friends of mine, Glenn & Andrea (and Glenn 2.0, AKA Gabe) flew to Albuquerque from Chicago and spent some time with a relative. They'd never met Russet, and I don't think I'd ever seen their kid, so they drove down Saturday. Next to T Or C is Elephant Butte Reservoir, the major water supply for Southern NM. We went to the reservoir and hung out at the kid's play area and talked while Gabe ran around, then had dinner. Glenn & Andrea had to head back to Albq as they were flying out early Sunday, we cruised around T Or C and found a nice used book store and hung out there for an hour. I had reasonable confidence that T Or C had a good book store and I was not disappointed: I found a biography called Time Lord about the man who invented standardized time zones! I'm looking forward to reading it, geek that I am.

One thing that I have not talked about is the memorial service for my friend, [livejournal.com profile] magic_rat. It was held April 21 in Tempe at The Game Depot, the game store where he had the stroke that took his life. Russet came down Thursday night and I worked a half-day Friday so that we could get into Phoenix early enough to get a decent night's sleep before the memorial service Saturday evening. We also had an engagement Saturday afternoon: Jason's mother invited us over to view three scrap books about Jason that she had previously made (Jason was her firstborn and thus the most thoroughly documented). It was really pleasant spending time with his mother, Grace. She's your classic small Japanese woman with just a bit of an accent: I think she and her husband moved to Hawaii after WW II, which is where Jason was born. They later moved to El Paso and then to Tempe.

(My friend and photographer of my wedding Terry sent me this. It sorta makes sense, which perhaps frightens me.)

I had a bit of an epiphany today: I suddenly understood that a corollary to Einstein's Theory of Relativity explains feline waste.

When we first met, I had one cat. Later, 2 cats, then after Deb and I were married we had 3 cats. It always seemed like the amount of cat poop that needed to be disposed increased much faster than the linear progression of the number of cats present.

Einstein's formula relating energy and mass is:
E=mc2
E is energy,
m is mass,
c is the speed of light.

Terry's formula relating cat poop to number of cats is:
P=nc2
P=poop,
n=number,
c=cats

Or in other words, 2 cats produce 4 times as much poop as 1 cat, and 3 cats produce 9 times as much poop as 1 cat, and so on...

There's an earlier comic by Phil Foglio that's online, Buck Godot: Zapgun For Hire. I have it in graphic novel format and quite enjoy it. It's SF.

It's done by the same people who did Shaun of the Dead. It's a cop movie and it was GREAT! A definite DVD buy when it becomes available. I caught it in a theatre today.
