Legislating Sin
Aug. 29th, 2006 01:41 pm"If you are not electing Christians, tried and true, under public scrutiny and pressure, if you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin."
-- Katherine Harris
The Doonesbury comic has a section called Say What? They run peculiar quotes, such as Bush now saying that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, and the above from the good ol’ former Florida Secretary of State during the 2000 elections.
Significant rantage follows. Feel free to ignore. This is not a direct slam against Bush, it's more against the "Moral Majority" and the religious right. And since Bush is associated with those groups, he is indirectly targeted.
It spurred a thought that finally congealed. I suppose it has been stated elsewhere, but the current ruling power (they don’t deserve the label of the political party that they are allegedly associated with) believes that They have the exclusive moral high ground AND the exclusive definition of morality, which boils down to “That what we do is Moral.” And it has been clearly stated by Them that if you’re not with us, you’re against us. Thus, we now have two classes of people in the universe: “Christians” (their label) and the unwashed, immoral horde.
Apparently every elected official who is not a “Christian” is a philanderer, drunk, wife beater, child molester, druggie, tax evader, homosexual, thief, and other deviant. And they want YOU! to join them in their hedonistic, sinful life style! If you’re not a “Christian”, then you are 100% committed to the overthrow of Everything That Is Good And Decent. Won’t anyone think of the children!!!
So, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, followers of Islam or Zoroastrianism, to hell with you! Kill ‘em all and God will bless us because we’re moral. You’ll either cease to exist because your god is a false god or you’ll burn in hell for eternity because you didn’t follow our god! (this is not my belief, I’m speaking ex cathedra extrapolating from the Harris quote and my perceptions of what They say.)
Why is it that They are so blinkered to think that Morality = Christianity? I just don’t understand. I’ll accept the label of Christian to be applied to me even though I am not actively religious. I try to do good, help others, not lie, etc. But I am not religiously active and I do not attend services. I try to live a decent, moral life. And I will NEVER align myself with what They consider to be a Christian. As has been pointed out so many times in the past, more people have been killed in the name of Christ than for any other cause.
As always, my standard joke for discussions like this. It originally was a Pope joke, I changed it to a Bush joke. It makes no difference which is placed in the joke, so I’ll alter the joke and will be an equal opportunity offender:
Late one night the King Pope George the W is lying in bed and receives a phone call from God.
God says, “George, I’ve got some news. I’ve decided to make the United States a Christian nation.”
The Pope says, “That’s wonderful! We’ll have a week of masses, we can finally get abortion outlawed, we can….”
God says, “Now just wait a minute before you go making all those plans, George. You ought to know that I’m calling from Salt Lake City.”
I would really like to see a Presidential rotation. For the year 2007, a Catholic bishop will have absolute dictatorial power over the US. In 2008, it’ll be a Mormon bishop. 2009, a Buddhist. 2010, a Hindu. 2011, a Rabbi. They’ll have the power to create laws whole cloth, which means for the first month they’ll be throwing out the laws of their predecessor. No meat on Friday, multiple wives are OK, everyone should meditate, no working on Saturday, don’t eat pork, don’t kill cows because they might be a reincarnated relative, etc. And everyone must obey them.
Gee, do you think we’d see a return to a non-religious country? The government has no business meddling with or promoting religion, religions have no business meddling with the government. THAT is what a separation of church and state is supposed to be. Anyone can worship freely, though we draw the line at human sacrifice and forced conversion. I can’t force you to be a worshiper of His Noodly Appendage, you can’t force me to worship Kali.
People need to wake up and realize that what Christianity means is that you believe in God, you believe Jesus was his son, and that he was born, died for our sins, was resurrected and ascended back to Heaven; and that you follow his teachings. It means that you should try to do better every day and not repeat the same mistakes.
BUT CHRISTIANITY IS NOT THE ONLY PATH TO MORAL LIVING.

Date: 2006-09-04 11:06 pm (UTC)Some of my morals say that annoying, screaming children should disappear permanently because they're being disruptive around people who supposedly do useful things. Does this mean I kill children? Absolutely not. Social contract and all that.
Gah. Give me the ten-legged gods any day.
