Airlines have to ask the TSA for permission 72 hours in advance to fly?

What does this mean if you have a family emergency and have to fly the same day? "Sorry that your dad is dying, but you can't travel for three days."

I'm looking forward to seeing what Bruce Schneier writes about this.

Actually, this is exactly what happened to us. (Evil Rob's dad, and we got the tix that night for the next day.) We got there in time, barely.
