It's one of the most corrupt nations in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world, and one of its oddities is that there is such a level of graft and necessary bribery that it can take up to twenty years to transfer a piece of property. You can't sell something promptly, which means there are a lot of poor farmers sitting on land that is useless to them, but not to somebody else, and it doesn't do them any good. And I believe that there is a community of something like 20,000 living on a garbage dump in any sort of shelter they can scrounge.

At some point when you're feeling like a shot of depression, look up "Haiti cookie." It's basically a dirt cake, eaten when you've got nothing else.

I pray for Haiti. I can't really figure out what would fix it.
