"Where in the Constitution is the separation of church and state?...You're telling me that's in the First Amendment?"
-- Delaware senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell, in a debate at the Widener University Law School

BWAHAHAHAHA! Yo momma so dumb she thinks the establishment clause means you have to put the year you started your business over the door!

Apparently Rush Limbaugh parroted the line that the phrase does not appear in the Constitution, and he's right, it doesn't explicitly. The concept is absolutely there, though. Apparently the phrase traces back to Thomas Jefferson, and since he's Prez #3, I'd say that's an old enough reference to count as canon.

Man, I wish Stewart wasn't on hiatus for the next couple of weeks. Speaking of which, I wonder if O'Donnell will be at the Rally to Restore Sanity? Probably not, she might spontaneously cease to exist.

Wow. Just wow.

And wasn't Jefferson also one of the people who wrote and signed the Constitution?

I'm not sure of the Constitution, he was the main framer of the Declaration of Independence.

This is the problem that I see with the Tea Party: as long as they spout the rhetoric, no one looks at whether or not they have something resembling a brain. I haven't been able to find the quote, but I think it was Gore Vidal who was talking about his grandfather (IIRC) and said that when he was in Congress that the body was composed of intellectual, reasoned men, skilled in rhetoric and Latin, who held meaningful debates about the issues. Kind of sad to see what it has become.

Jefferson was a delegate to the constitutional congress (that's not phrased well, sorry!), so I'm sure he had a major input in to it, but representatives of 12 of the 13 colonies were part of that then all had to ratify.

And if you listen, the audience can't believe what they have just heard and erupts in a fit of laughter, before being told by the moderator "She's serious, people."
