"Abortion can be accessed by driving approximately 230-250 miles -- an inconvenience, but still a manageable one."
—Texas AG and GOP gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott, on the law shutting down 80% of his state's abortion clinics

Ignoring people too poor to own reliable cars or afford long-distance transport or have the papers to get them past Border Patrol checkpoints. I have two doctors who are 100 miles or more from our house, and I don't have much of a choice if I want good medical care. If I had to go to Albuquerque or Lubbock, it would probably give me pause, especially since I don't have a Texas passport. ;-)

What I really hate about a lot of these politicians is the hypocrisy. I'm not talking about Abbott specifically here as I haven't heard anything specific, but for example, the pro-life doctor who encouraged his wife to have two abortions, one or two of his mistresses to have abortions, and slept with several other patients. And he has an excellent chance of being re-elected.

There's an old joke: If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a holy sacrament.

I think someone should put up a sort of budget. This is what a person working full time on minimum wage earns in Texas, this is how much rent, utilities, etc, cost, this is how much it costs to take the bus, with this comment in mind. Of course, it won't make the slightest difference to him because his goal is to end abortion altogether, but it might be enlightening for more reasonable people.

Before the Supreme Court allowed several women's clinics to re-open, there were none in the north of Texas. None in the west. None in the southwest. They were all aligned in the DFW/Houston corridor, and there were only a dozen or so. Absolutely no rural service. Even though they're going to be allowed to re-open while further appeals are made, there's staffing and medical issues to be resolved and some clinics remain closed.

Texas is a real mess. They're ruining their ground water to frack for oil, devastating farming and cattle industry and polluting wells. The incidence of microquakes is rising, though I think Oklahoma is getting more than Texas. And the state of their health care, outside of urban areas, is horrible.

And the courts keep agreeing with this nonsense. New rule, new rule - only women may decide issues involving women's health, and if there aren't any women in your organization, you don't get to say anything at all.

I wish! A bunch of old white conservative men deciding women's rights, geez! I'm still waiting for minorities and women to rise up and take over government, they have the numbers and they'd be hard pressed to do worse than the current lot.

They would be able to, we'werere it not for the old white conservatives drawing districts that prevent minorities from electing lots of seats, then passing identification requirements that insist only things that have to be paid for and that require a significant time and documents investment can count as correct identification, plus poll challengers, intimidation campaigns, and an entire series of court decisions and lawsuits.

That is, when they aren't outright rejecting or "losing" registrations on the flimsiest of pretexts.
