"I'd love that. She's really somebody who knows what's happening. She's a special person...No matter where I go, everybody loves her."
—Donald Trump, asked if, as president, he might seek Sarah Palin's advice or appoint her to a Cabinet post

and

"It was my phrase. I came up with it, and I had it copyrighted. And people see the biggest standing ovations...and all of a sudden some of the other candidates started using the phrase. But I had it copyrighted, so they're not allowed to use it. Which even surprises me."
—Donald Trump on "Make America Great Again"

Regarding Palin: you betcha! Though I've never watched Trump's Apprentice show, I wonder if she would last a week. He should probably put her in charge of the Department of Education and get that final stake driven in to the heart of American education.

The Make America Great Again slogan was actual Ronald Reagan's. I don't know if it was when he initially ran for POTUS or when he ran for reelection. I'm curious if he actually got a copyright awarded for that phrase, he's good at making pronouncements in advance of reality, like when he announced that he was running for POTUS the week before he got the paperwork filed.

While I know you can copyright a phrase, can you copyright a phrase that doesn't have anything unique about it?

It's possible that trademark would be more appropriate, like Coke's 'The Real Thing'. I do know that political campaigns have slightly different rules, still, I think Trump is deluded on this one. No court or jury would find that his phrase is sufficiently distinguished from the Reagan/Bush phrase to prevent brand confusion, and since copyright never expires down here these days, that will be perpetual.

Another comment in this thread has a photo of the actual Reagan/Bush campaign button.

Copyright wouldn't help Trump in this case. Trademark law might, if he wants to file the paperwork for that, but even so, he'd have to get past Ronald Reagan to make it work.

As for Trump / Palin, well, they would certainly let us see all the flaws the other candidates have...

Ahem:

I saw an interview with The Donald where he claimed his version is unique because he leaves off the word 'Let's'. This guy, I tell ya.

I'm thinking about dropping the Let's. With it, the phrase is eliciting the people to work together for a common goal. Without it, it's a command or a statement that the speaker will 'git'r'dun'. Either way, those four letters are pretty important to the message.
