"Running for president is a significant sacrifice...There is almost no personal time...Time with my family is non-existent... Health and sleep are limited... The constant attacks never stop...My days are no longer my own..."
-- Sen. Ted Cruz in a fundraising email

"Two words: Boo hoo."
-- Sen. Elizabeth Warren in response

Being the President of the United States is a horrible job that destroys people. Take a look at Obama's photo on Inauguration Day, now take a look at one of him now. And he has another 7 months to go. I just finished a book ("Standing Next To History"), sort of an autobiography by a Secret Service agent who was on the Presidential Protection Detail under Ronald Reagan (he came on after the shooting). He said that Reagan took every opportunity to escape to Camp David on the weekend. I can't blame Reagan in the least.

If somehow, by some horrible twist of fate, Cruz gets elected, he's going to fantasize about how easy it was on the campaign trail.

Remember when Mitt Romney's wife said something similar during the last election campaign? Can they seriously believe being president is easier than running for it?

It's the Delusion of the Unknown, assuming knowledge of what is yet to be and comparing it to the current situation.

Perhaps I should just reduce it to "They're delusional". ;-)

I'm reminded of the foolish woman who hooks up a jerk despite knowing his history of treating women like trash. "I'm different. He won't treat me like that."

You know, they could make this a much easier burden on themselves by going at both government and campaigning by starting from a position of "reasonable things, as determined by people who have no interest in profiting from them, will be debated and voted on in an orderly fashion" instead of the morass of tricks, bribes-that-aren't, and ideological purges that try to pass for governance and campaigning these days. They could make it less stressful by being honest and doing what they were elected to do.

It's easier to polarise than to genuinely debate, though - throw out the red meat, shift the base another notch to the right, and eventually, you wind up with the current situation, where considered reasoning belongs as much as in Warhammer 40,000.

Not that things are yet unsalvageable, but FSM knows, it's disturbing to see the lunatic, fascist rantings of Drumpf and Cruz given pride of place in American airtime and print.

It's true, and soundbites work better than reasonable debate. It would probably change things a lot if networks refused to air the stupid stuff in the interest of raising the discourse, but at the moment, that would mean not showing things that would affect a lot of us.
