You didn't actually believe them, did you? After all, most of Big G's revenue is derived from selling advertising.

Well, today Google said that they are formally NOT going to follow through on their promise to block third-party cookies in their browser.

I AM SHOCKED, SHOCKED I SAY!

No, not really.

There's a reason why I don't use their browser, and not trusting Google at their word is one of them.

Gates may have believed that at the time, but I doubt Microsoft was actually not collecting data. Perhaps not for marketing, but for some other purpose.

Yeah, it's hard to say how much and what data they were collecting.  We know Google and Facebook sucks up as much as they can lay their hands on, and Apple is pretty resistant to collecting user data, everyone else is pretty much a mystery.
