"Let me be clear. Americans have freedom of religion -- but not freedom from religion."
—Texas Congressman Sam Johnson, on the Preserve and Protect God in Military Oaths Act, which would require Air Force Academy cadets to say "So help me God"

*sigh* Exactly where in the Constitution does it say you must follow A religion?

When I was attending local college campuses (I'm now in an online mode) I always wanted to start a Campus Crusade for Cthulhu: It found me! campaign. Cthulhu saves: in case he's hungry later.

I would think this is one of those places where we can point out that the Constitution does say "Congress shall make no law regarding an establishment of religion" and that, even if posited in the most Deistic way possible, one is still establishing a religion to force someone to say such a phrase.

Yep, clearly unconstitutional. Guys like this elected to public office make me ill, but even worse are the people who pull the lever in the voting booth for these clowns.

Have you also followed the so-called Religious Freedom bill (now law) in Indiana? License to discriminate, for individuals and corporations alike. It is utter nonsense, and a step backwards. I hope the threatened economic ramifications come to pass, and then some. There should be a price for ignorance, and a price for bigotry.

Texas is so weird. Their gerrymandering is so skewed that Austin, a bastion of liberal voters and the state capitol, is represented by four Republican representatives.

The GenCon convention threatened to pull out, but they're under contract until 2020. Doesn't mean that people won't attend, but the show will theoretically go on. Since they revised the law, Angie's List(?) said the changes were not a repeal and are insufficient, it'll be interesting to see what the NCAA does. I'm doubly-amused because I think the NCAA is a slave-based organization (less than 2% of NCAA football or basketball players makes it in the pros).

Yep, same story here in FL, really. The urban areas naturally lean Democratic, but the districts are drawn such that only a handful in the whole state are actually considered competitive, and our legislature remains overwhelmingly Republican. We even passed an amendment to the state Constitution a few years ago calling for "logical and compact" districts, and the resulting redistricting was the same gerrymandered nonsense PLUS a court case wherein it was revealed that the "nonpartisan" experts brought in to suggest the new district maps were in fact the same old GOP hacks, just operating behind the scenes instead of out in the open. The case is still in the FL Supreme Court, we'll see if it gets anywhere this time around.

And then we have an Arizona state senator suggesting church attendance on Sunday should be mandatory.. though, at least without the useless waste of time of a bill that these sorts typically conjure up to help trumpet their piety.

Arizona is so weird, I praise the FSM whenever I think about me leaving the state of my birth 10 years ago. I don't know what's happened, if it was the Y2K redistricting/gerrymandering that screwed it up so or what.

I don't know how much you've been following the Real ID national law here. It was passed post-9/11 and it kind of standardized driver's licenses with certain features. Arizona has gone through two or three DL redesigns since the law went in to effect, and they still don't meet the standard required by the law, and they're not getting any more waivers. Because FEDERAL GUBMINT STEPPING ON STATES RIGHTS! or something like that.

Now, as a result, Arizona citizens will have to show a current passport to get on airplanes -- there's currently an 8 week waiting list to get an APPOINTMENT at a post office to get a passport! Last week Tuesday I stopped at my local post office, I had printed out my passport application, it took 15 minutes or so to take the photo and do everything else, and the woman said they're running about 2.5 weeks right now -- fortunately NM passports go to Colorado for processing, AZ goes to San Francisco and they've just been buried.
